What the judges said
The judges commented on the yachts focused design, to sail across oceans safely and swiftly, with a corresponding high degree of comfort and utility. Judge Tim Murphy admitted he was enamored by the triple-headsail rig and the excellent cockpit configuration enclosed by a hardtop, with a large companionway adjacent to the interior accommodations. He then compared this arrangement to the floor plan of a contemporary cruising catamaran. He singled out the cockpit for particular praise:
"The cockpit arrangement was well done, with very good protection. It's a real sailing boat, meant to be sailed long distances."
Cruising World's Herb McCormick made a similar point during deliberations:
"I could see myself knocking off a lot of miles hunkered down in that really unique cockpit."
An owner's verdict
The Pegasus 50 that came aboard for sea trials had already proven itself at sea. Her owner had crossed the Atlantic himself, sailing from the Canaries to the Caribbean in 17 days. By the judges' account, he was as happy as could be with his vessel, a verdict that carried weight with the panel.
