Boat of the Year Nominee Feature: Steed of Poseidon

Herb McCormick, editor-at-large at Cruising World and a 2026 Boat of the Year judge, sailed the Pegasus 50 during the magazine's sea trials. She was then nominated for the Boat of the Year and previewed in the magazine's September 2026 issue. Here is what he made of her.

McCormick came aboard as a judge and left describing a yacht built for serious bluewater sailing. After a day on the water, his conclusion about the team behind the boat was direct: "the Pegasus crew knew exactly what they were doing." His summary of the boat's purpose was equally plain; this is "a boat set up to make many miles, with pace and in comfort."

The sea trial brought that out clearly. In around 15 knots of true wind the Pegasus 50 recorded 9,75 knots under gennaker, and held 8,5 knots upwind on the staysail. Under power at 2000 rpm she made 8,5 knots. The test boat had already crossed the Atlantic from the Canaries to the Caribbean in 17 days, with a 24-hour run of 260 nautical miles and a top speed of 19,96 knots on that delivery.

McCormick gave equal weight to how the boat is set up to live and work at sea. He noted the minimal transition from cockpit to saloon, the U-shaped galley set into the row of stainless-steel appliances, and the pilot station for navigation and watchkeeping, with its long views over the sail plan and foredeck and a 27-inch screen. Of that station his note was brief: "I found it quite brilliant."

On price, he set the loaded Pegasus 50 against the rest of the fleet and concluded that "the cost actually seems reasonable."

The piece closes on the boat's namesake, the winged horse of Greek myth, and the thought that a yacht built to move quickly across the water carries something of that inspiration.

The Pegasus 50 review by Herb McCormick appeared in Cruising World, September 2026.
