Production and craftsmanship

Right from the outset Pegasus set out to establish the highest possible level of production quality and craftsmanship, leveraging as many advantages of smaller-scale boat building as possible. The result is a level of detail – both practical and aesthetic – that helps set Pegasus apart from the crowd.

This applies even to the smaller composite parts such as bulkheads, floors and water tanks. All are made of lightweight vacuum infused composite with a foam core and are laminated to the hull before the deck is joined. In addition, the hull-deck join has a shoebox style connection that is first glued and then laminated both inside and outside.

The end result is a very lightweight, but incredibly stiff, monocoque construction analogous to those used in the automotive industry. On the downside, it’s a much more labour intensive process than is employed for high-volume production yachts, but it creates a boat with structural stability and longevity of a totally different level.

Miha Breskvar, co-founder of Pegasus Yachts, explained: “This level is achieved through a combination of the materials we use, our infusion processes, the monocoque lamination and the time we are able to spend on the build of each boat.”

Owners of every Pegasus yacht also benefit from the luxury available to the shipyard of being able to devote time to attention to detail. This results in a very high level of finish in all respects.

Owners of every Pegasus yacht benefit from the luxury of the shipyard devoting time and attention to detail.

Practical examples include the holes in bulkheads through which hoses or wiring pass. These are pre-made at the lamination stage where possible, creating a tidy and smooth aperture. Alternatively, when one has to be drilled post lamination, special 3D printed inserts with smooth edges that won’t damage pipe work or cables are fitted.

These important details are all too frequently overlooked in a search for economy. Yet on any boat that sails considerable distances, everything shakes and moves around so much that pipework and insulation of wiring will otherwise chafe on sharp corners.

Pegasus’s processes also ensure the core material used in every part of the laminate is fully protected from water ingress. Equally, all cables are pre-prepared in different harnesses using different colours to distinguish different voltages.

The same diligence is applied to finishing aesthetic elements. For example, soft furnishings are unique to each boat and a CNC sewing machine is used to stitch the leather upholstery and trim. The exact pattern of the stitching can therefore be designed in advance of manufacture and is carried out with absolute precision.
