Comfort under sail: by design, not by volume

Most large cruising yachts answer the question of comfort by adding volume: another cabin, a bigger saloon, a longer options list. The Pegasus 67 takes a different view, spending its ingenuity on how the boat behaves at sea and how it is lived on. The results are surprising at first glance, and make perfect sense the moment you are offshore.

Gimballed settees

The saloon seating is set on a lightweight carbon-fibre structure that pivots along the boat’s longitudinal axis to compensate for heel. At a touch of a button it can be pivoted 15 degrees in either direction. It’s a neatly-executed innovative system that reduces the physical effort needed to brace yourself and helps reduce the disorientation that can contribute to seasickness.

This feature proved very popular in Pegasus 50, so it will be featured also on the Pegasus 67, along with a new, hinged design and a novelty: a gimballed navigation station, enabling one to keep watch in greater comofort.

Integrated carbon fibre gangway

Pegasus addressed these elements at the concept stage of the design. The outcome is efficient, yet stylish, solutions that are inspired by the best of the superyacht world, but interpreted to work on a serious blue-water cruiser.

The integrated foldable gangway is made of carbon fibre and easily deployed, creating a safe arrangement that works whether the boat is moored stern-to a low pontoon, or high quay wall.

Longitudinal Tender Garage

Tender garages are often compromised by a desire to create more aft cabin space, with the result that an undersized dinghy must be specified, or complicated arrangements are needed to launch the tender sideways. However, the Pegasus 67 has a longitudinal garage that will take a hard-bottom tender of up to 3,5 m, with a 20 hp transom mounted engine. Easy launch and retrieval was a clear objective from the earliest stages of the project and is achieved at a touch of button, using a remote-controlled reversible Harken FlatWinder powered block.

Both these features are examples of Pegasus’s long-standing commitment to making large yachts more manageable, civilised and surprisingly easy to operate, rather than merely adding accommodation volume.

Extended bow

The extended bow shape, with integrated sprit, is one of the more interesting Pegasus 67 design choices. The hull is extended forward by integrating the bowsprit into the canoe body of the boat, rather than adding a separate projection.

The boat therefore has similar internal accommodation to a 60-footer, but benefits from a longer waterline, which boosts speed, confers a more comfortable motion, especially in terms of pitching and slamming, and adds extra on-deck stowage space.

The integrated bow design also makes it easier to create space for handling the anchor and reaching/downwind sails than on a conventional foredeck with a separate bowsprit, simplifying anchoring and mooring maneouvres.

In effect, instead of adding more cabins, Pegasus has used extra length at each end of the boat to improve comfort at sea, sail handling and seakeeping, while also markedly improving the ergonomics of life on board.

All-weather cockpit protection

This is closer to multihull thinking than conventional monohull practice and makes a huge difference to life on board. Standard equipment includes a fixed glass windshield with a sliding central section and a hardtop over the cockpit. Side canvas panels protect against rain, splash and sun, and the cockpit can be fully enclosed as an option. It’s far less vulnerable to breaking waves when offshore than fabric sprayhoods and biminis, yet is also cleverly styled to blend seamlessly with the yacht’s lines.

Saloon and cockpit as one protected area

Pegasus yachts are designed around functional comfort at sea, which means shaping the boat around the places where the crew spends most of its waking time: the cockpit and the saloon. The level difference between the two is reduced to just two steps, and only a large glass companionway divides them, visually merging the spaces. The result is a spacious, ergonomic area for living and watchkeeping, with a full 360° view. Because the yacht is designed to be sailed by two people, the aim is for the person inside and the person outside to feel as if they share one space.

Other important innovations

These include the light displacement concept that allows for fast passage times, even though the boat has a rig of a manageable size that’s easy to handle. A heavier boat would need a larger sail plan to achieve the same passage times. In addition, redundancy, autonomy and ease of maintenance built into the design and the very comprehensive base specification.
